 In response to your question: How do you prevent yourself from going on autopilot?  What I&#039;ve found is that spontaneity helps me.  Almost every day I try something new or try to learn something new.  Keeps my brain from going into &quot;relax&quot; mode. Haha!  Also, I&#039;ve discovered that when I&#039;m struggling with wanting to &quot;shut down&quot; my brain at an inopportune time, talking to myself out loud about what I&#039;m doing at the moment and what I&#039;d like to be doing helps keep me going.  Sounds corny, but it work for me.  Otherwise I could live inside of my head pretty easily.
